Power of Proper Breathing Techniques

Chances are you’re reading this right now with a tight chest taking shallow breaths, maybe through your mouth.  Could be that you’re even holding your breath, not at all focused on the inflow and outflow of the air in your lungs.


 
Breathing is more than just an unconscious process necessary for survival - it's a vital function with the ability to  transform our health, mood, appearance, and energy levels. 
 
Even ancient practices such as  Pranayama or  Qi Qong harnessed the power of proper breathing – techniques that have now been validated by modern science. 
 
High stress or simply not being aware of proper technique could contribute to improper breathing techniques.  To assist with getting your body into a more relaxed state, make sure your body is getting the proper nutrients and incorporate the techniques listed below:
 

1. Dual Nostril Breathing: 

Did you know each nostril plays a distinct role in our wellbeing? 
  • The right nostril is linked to the sympathetic nervous system, kicking into gear our 'fight or flight' response. 
  • The left nostril stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and rejuvenation.

 

2. Ideal Breathing Pattern:  

A slow, measured breathing rhythm of about 5.5 breaths per minute - roughly 5.5 seconds for each inhale and exhale - is optimal.  This ensures the optimal oxygen intake. 

 

3. Nose > Mouth:  

Breathing through the nose is more beneficial than mouth breathing.  Our noses are designed to warm, filter, and condition the incoming air, providing our bodies with a higher quality of oxygen.

Consequences of chronic mouth breathing: 

    • Can lead to undesirable changes in facial structure, such as long, narrow faces and recessed jaws, due to altered tongue position and muscle function
    • Impacts oral health, causing misaligned bite 
    • Dries out the oral cavity, reducing saliva production which is crucial for neutralizing acids and cleaning food particles. This increases the risk of cavities and gum disease. 
    • Can contribute to snoring and sleep apnea, affecting sleep quality

Correct, mindful breathing can induce feelings of euphoria. Harnessing the power of your breath can unlock a sense of tranquility and joy within you.  Some even note a “trance” state when utilizing these techniques. 

As you sit here, consider the simple act of breathing.  It’s a remarkable tool we’ve been gifted… capable of transforming our health, mood, and vitality.  
Remember, each breath you take is not just a sign of life; it's an opportunity to elevate your living.
